Holmsley Campsite and Caravan Park is one of the larger campsites that lies in the stunningly beautiful New Forest. It might interest you to know that this particular site is situated on what used to be Holmsley Airfield in World War 2.
It is also one of 12 New Forest Wartime Airfields and Advanced Landing Grounds that were in use at that time. Thankfully now in more peaceful times, the actual site itself has remained much the same but has now been modified to accommodate thousands of campers every year. Holmsley Campsite is able to provide a unique and amazing forest base for camping holidays and outdoor activities.
A vast and lovely New Forest campsite, Holmsley is the perfect location to be immersed amongst the forest, take in the views and experience all that nature can offer. The history of this magical part of the New Forest is reflected in the landscape that brings visitors back year after year. Centuries old beech and oak trees are the main feature here, which fully illustrates that you’re situated in one of England’s most amazing woodlands. Holmsley, being one of the largest Camping in the Forest campsites has 600 pitches and many can be found nestling amongst the trees in their own secluded area, or sitting in open fields. This enables campers to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the forest right from their tent or caravan without having to go anywhere.
Campsite History
The site covers a large area and its expansive grassland makes up most of the site, it is also very safe. The original aircraft hardstandings and taxiways are now the campsite roads and parking bays, so if you’re interested in the New Forest’s wartime history, then this is a good place to stay! There is also a wartime memorial just up the road from the campsite. In addition to having the forest on the doorstep to explore, kids have plenty of space to play within the grounds without having to be under a constant watchful eye.
As mentioned previously, if you decide to camp at Holmsley, then the opportunity to take off straight into the forest on foot or by bike is readily available to you. There are endless miles of tracks and footpaths waiting to be discovered and exploring this way is a favourite amongst families who come to stay at the site. There is also a fully equipped shop on site selling hot food, bread, groceries and even alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages if required. The shop also supplies typical camping essentials and games.
