Things To See At Matley Wood
The New Forest is not surprisingly an area of special interest because of its unique environment and rare mix of habitats that support both animal and plant life. The New Forest is also a haven to local wildlife, apart from the famous ponies and deer, it is home to the UK’s largest breeding population of the rare Dartford Warbler.
Its also worth noting that all three snake species of Britain can be discovered in the forest, the adder, grass snake and smooth snake. But do not worry, they are more scared of you so there is very little chance of encountering one. If you really want to seek them out however, they are known to be found basking on the heathland during the Summer months.
Equally, rare and impressive plant life can be found in abundance, with around 700 species of wildflower growing in the forest. This amounts to around a third of the total found in the UK, while rare plants such as the blue marsh gentian and the bog orchid grow in the New Forest mires.
